About Indian Malt Whisky Association

The Indian Malt Whisky Association (IMWA) is the sole representative body for the Indian malt whisky industry, both single malt & pure/vatted malt whisky producers/manufacturers in India. Founded in 2024, members of this association include renowned Indian companies in the Indian malt whisky space like John Distillery, Amrut Distilleries, Radico Khaitan and Piccadily Agro. Together the present IMWA members account for a substantial part of the revenue generated from malt whisky produced across the country.

What We Do

IMWA strives to preserve, protect, promote, transform and strengthen the Indian malt whisky industry by laying down the highest levels of regulatory framework, legislations, technical standards and certification mark, in a fair, transparent and ethical manner, ensuring quality and authenticity, thereby facilitating business, enhancing industry credibility world-wide and creating a win-win situation for all stakeholders, regulators, industry and trade.

We are raising the standards for quality, production and customisation within the industry to elevate Indian malt whisky brands for the discerning consumers, both domestically and internationally.

IMWA encourages interactive, meaningful dialogues with all stakeholders to facilitate ease of doing business and creating a level playing field. We aim to serve as a platform to share & exchange knowledge on industry best practices and bring in the highest standard of quality, authenticity and technical processes.

IMWA members are committed to maintaining the highest standard of compliances and adherence to the laws of the land, in all aspects of their operations. Compliance to the laid down regulatory and technical standards to earn the coveted certification mark is the hallmark of the association, therby ensuring quality and authenticity of Indian Malt whisky, both domestically and world-wide.

Alongside our members, we work to ensure the Indian malt whisky industry operates in an inclusive, responsible and transparent manner with employees, consumers and external stakeholders.

IMWA professes responsible alcohol consumption by creating awareness about the impact of spurious, counterfeit, illicit products, underage consumption and drunk driving.

IMWA believes that alcohol should be consumed in a responsible manner and in moderation. To this end, IMWA works to enhance the levels of awareness, thereby encouraging people to adopt a culture of ‘Drink Responsibly’. Below links provide valuable information on issues related to alcohol & health.

Objectives

The Indian Malt Whisky Association is established with the goal to put together formal definitions of the Indian malt whisky category, promote Indian malt whisky, educate consumers and support distilleries that produce malt whisky in India. The intent is to create and grow worldwide demand, appreciation and respect for malt whiskies made in India by:

  • Framing and advocating equitable, reasonable and implementable regulatory and technical standards/legislations, and guidelines, and share best practices to safeguard and enhance the image of Indian malt whisky industry.
  • Campaigning for regulatory and tax environments which support improved competitiveness and prosperity.
  • Encouraging truth and transparency in aging, bottling, labelling and traceability.
  • Filing of GI (Geographical Indication) recognition.
  • Educating consumers about what Indian malt whiskies are and are not.
